Prayer Title: A Prayer for Children Suffering Abuse, Violence, War, Exploitation, and Trafficking

Lord Jesus, today we bring before You the children whose suffering is hidden from most of the world.

The child who is afraid to go home.

The child who is afraid of someone already inside the home.

The child who has learned to listen for footsteps.

The child who flinches when someone raises a hand.

The child who has been told to keep a terrible secret.

The child whose innocence has been violated.

The child whose hunger, bruises, fear, silence, or sudden changes in behavior are trying to tell a story that words cannot yet tell.

Jesus, see them.

Protect them.

And please, Lord, send someone who notices.

Give teachers, relatives, neighbors, physicians, nurses, counselors, clergy, coaches, social workers, police officers, and other trustworthy adults the wisdom to recognize when something is wrong and the courage to act to protect a child.

Where abuse is hidden, bring it into the light.

Where adults are looking away because the truth is uncomfortable, awaken their consciences.

Where a child has tried to tell someone and was not believed, send another person who will listen.

Where a child believes the abuse is somehow his or her fault, break that lie.

No child causes an adult to abuse them.

No child deserves violence.

No child loses dignity because someone else violated it.

Lord, protect children suffering sexual abuse and exploitation. Rescue children whose bodies are being treated as commodities. Destroy the networks that buy, sell, manipulate, threaten, transport, exploit, and traffic human beings. Give investigators wisdom, governments courage, communities vigilance, and survivors safe places in which to heal.

Protect children exploited through images and technology. Guard them from adults who groom, manipulate, deceive, or threaten them. Give parents and caregivers wisdom to protect children without teaching them to live in fear.

Jesus, we pray for children living amid war.

For the child awakened by explosions.

For the child hiding underground.

For the child who has lost a home.

For the child who has lost a parent.

For the child separated from family in the confusion of displacement.

For the child crossing a border carrying almost nothing.

For the child who does not understand why adults are fighting.

For children pressured, forced, or manipulated into armed groups and violence.

Lord, shield them.

Bring an end to wars. Restrain those who deliberately harm civilians. Protect hospitals, schools, homes, churches, shelters, humanitarian workers, and places where frightened families seek refuge.

Give leaders wisdom to pursue a just peace and courage to protect innocent life.

We pray for children suffering neglect and extreme poverty: those who are hungry, homeless, without clean water or medicine, those who work when they should be learning and playing, and those whose vulnerability makes them targets for exploitation.

Move our hearts beyond sadness into action.

Do not allow the suffering of millions to become so enormous that we forget the value of one child.

One frightened little girl matters.

One hungry little boy matters.

One teenager trapped in exploitation matters.

One child hiding beneath a blanket tonight matters.

Every one has a name.

Every one has a story.

Every one bears Your image.

Lord, we pray also for children whose suffering is inflicted by people who should have protected them.

This betrayal creates wounds that can reach deep into a person’s understanding of love, safety, trust, family, and even You.

Do not let an abusive adult become the image through which a wounded child understands God.

Show that child, slowly and safely, what trustworthy love actually looks like.

Send people who respect boundaries.

People who keep promises.

People who do not demand affection.

People who listen.

People who believe.

People who stay.

Give survivors access to skilled help and patient accompaniment. When memories surface years later, remind them that healing does not have an expiration date.

Mary, Mother of Sorrows, gather suffering children beneath your mantle.

You knew what it was to flee with Jesus from a ruler who wanted Him dead. Stay especially close to families fleeing violence tonight.

St. Joseph, protector of the Child Jesus, intercede for every adult entrusted with protecting children. Make fathers, mothers, grandparents, teachers, clergy, and caregivers courageous defenders of the innocent.

Holy Family, shelter children whose own homes have not been safe.

And Jesus, You said that what we do to the least of Your brothers and sisters, we do to You.

Do not let us look away.

When a child needs protection, make us brave.

When something needs reporting, make us act.

When a survivor needs to be believed, make us listen.

When a family needs practical help, make us generous.

When injustice needs confronting, make us persistent.

And when the suffering of children makes us wonder where You are, remind us that You are not indifferent to their pain.

You are with the child who is crying.

You are with the child who is hiding.

You are with the child who is waiting to be rescued.

And You call us to become Your hands, Your feet, Your voice, and Your protection in this world.

Lord Jesus, rescue the endangered.

Protect the innocent.

Expose what is hidden.

Bring justice where evil has been committed.

Heal what has been wounded.

Comfort those who cannot yet speak about what happened.

And teach us to build homes, churches, schools, communities, and nations in which every child is treated as sacred.

Always remember Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.

Holy Family! Help us to be a holy family and pray for us!
