Lord Jesus, our family has welcomed a baby.
A new little life has arrived, and everything about this child is a gift. Tiny fingers curl around ours. A newborn sleeps against someone’s chest. Grandparents hold their grandchild for the first time. Aunts and uncles gather around. Pictures fill our phones. Everyone marvels at the miracle of someone so small changing an entire family simply by being here.
We are grateful, Lord.
Truly grateful.
And yet, hidden beneath the joy, there is another feeling that can be difficult to admit.
We are still waiting.
We love this baby.
We do not wish this child away.
We would never trade this baby’s arrival for anything.
But sometimes holding the newest member of our family makes the emptiness in our own arms feel even more noticeable.
There is something about the smell of a newborn’s head, the weight of a sleeping baby against the chest, the tiny noises, the little fingers wrapped around one of ours, that awakens every hope we have tried so carefully to carry.
And sometimes the thought comes before we can stop it:
“We thought we would have a baby by now too.”
Lord, meet us there.
When everyone is celebrating and we suddenly need to step into another room because tears are coming, follow us.
When someone innocently says, “Doesn’t this make you want one even more?” give us grace.
When family conversations naturally revolve around the new baby and our own waiting suddenly feels invisible, remind us that You still see it.
When we watch our parents become grandparents and realize how deeply we want to give them another grandchild, protect us from feeling that we have failed them.
We have not failed.
Infertility is not failure.
Waiting for adoption is not failure.
Our worth within this family is not determined by whether we have produced another generation.
Lord, protect us especially from comparison.
Do not let us count how quickly someone else conceived compared with how long we have tried.
Do not let us measure one family’s path against another’s.
Do not let the arrival of this baby become another clock ticking inside our heads.
This child is not evidence that You remembered them and forgot us.
This baby is simply this baby—a completely unique human person whose life deserves to be celebrated without carrying the burden of our grief.
So help us love this little one freely.
Let us hold the baby without secretly asking when we will hold our own.
Let us change diapers, rock the baby, make silly faces, buy tiny clothes, take pictures, celebrate milestones, and become the aunt, uncle, godparent, or family member this child needs.
Let our love be real.
But when loving this baby awakens our own longing, do not make us ashamed of that either.
Two things can be true.
We can adore this baby and still ache for ours.
We can celebrate this birth and still grieve the pregnancy we have never experienced.
We can rejoice as our family grows and still wonder when—or whether—our own family will grow.
We can thank You for this child and still ask You for another.
So we ask again, Lord.
If it is Your will, please grant us the gift of conception.
Let there someday be another positive pregnancy test.
Another heartbeat.
Another little face appearing on an ultrasound.
Another baby entering this family.
And if our child will come through adoption, Lord, please bring the call for which we have waited.
Prepare the child.
Protect the child’s mother and father.
Guide every decision freely and lovingly.
And if our lives are meant to become one family, bring us together in Your time.
But while we wait, teach us something through this new little one.
Remind us why children are worth waiting for.
Remind us that every child is a gift rather than something anyone earns.
Let this baby’s presence soften rather than harden our hearts.
When we hold this little one, let us practice the tenderness we hope someday to pour into our own child.
When we pray over this baby, let those prayers enlarge our hearts.
When we watch grandparents light up while holding their grandchild, let us treasure the moment rather than immediately mourning what is still missing.
Mary, Mother of Jesus, help us hold joy and sorrow together without allowing either one to destroy the other.
St. Joseph, teach us how to love a child generously without needing that child to belong to us.
Blessed Fulton Sheen, intercede for the family members who are still waiting for the gift of parenthood even as they celebrate new life around them.
Holy Family, bless this new baby.
Guard this little body.
Protect this developing mind.
Preserve this child’s innocence.
Let this little one grow surrounded by faith, laughter, security, family, and love.
And Jesus, someday when this child is older, may we be able to tell the story of this season without bitterness.
Perhaps we will say:
“You arrived while we were still waiting for our own child. We loved you completely, even though sometimes holding you made our hearts ache. You were one of the beautiful gifts God gave us during the waiting.”
And perhaps one day another child will be sitting beside us when we tell that story.
Perhaps the child we conceived.
Perhaps the child who came through adoption.
Perhaps the child whose arrival we cannot yet imagine.
And if that day never comes in the way we hope, let this little one still know that our love was never secondhand or diminished.
Because love is not divided when another child enters a family.
Love multiplies.
So today, Lord, we thank You for the first grandbaby.
We celebrate this precious new life.
And quietly, without taking anything away from this joy, we place our own longing before You once again:
Jesus, we are still waiting.
Please remember the empty arms standing beside the full ones.
Bless the baby who has arrived.
And remain very close to those still waiting for theirs.
Always remember Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.
Holy Family! Help us to be a holy family and pray for us!
Amen.
