Lord Jesus, when pregnancy brings questions about prenatal testing, uncertainty about a baby’s health, or news that something may be different from what we hoped or expected, come very close.
Before any test is performed, before any image appears on an ultrasound screen, before any diagnosis is spoken, and before anyone begins describing probabilities, disabilities, treatments, or outcomes, help us remember the first and most important truth:
This is a child.
This little one is not a diagnosis. Not a chromosome count. Not an ultrasound finding. Not a percentage, prognosis, syndrome, defect, disability, or medical problem to be solved.
This is a human person, created in Your image and likeness, whose dignity does not depend upon health, intelligence, ability, independence, appearance, or length of life.
Lord, give parents wisdom when deciding which prenatal tests to accept. Help them distinguish between information that can genuinely help care for mother or child and testing that may create anxiety without providing meaningful benefit. Give them physicians who explain honestly what a test can tell them, what it cannot tell them, its limitations, and whether knowing the result can help prepare for treatment, delivery, or the baby’s needs.
Keep fear from making decisions for us.
When testing is appropriate and may help physicians care for mother or baby, give us peace in receiving that help. When testing is optional and would not change the care we would lovingly give our child, give us freedom to discern whether we truly need that information.
And if unexpected news comes, Lord, please be there in the room.
Be there during the silence after the doctor speaks.
Be there when medical words seem to blur together.
Be there when parents stare at one another wondering what happens next.
Be there when they cry in the car afterward.
Be there when they begin searching for information and encounter frightening statistics, worst-case scenarios, and stories that make the future seem impossible.
Slow everything down.
Give them time to understand.
Give them excellent medical counsel. Lead them to specialists who respect both scientific truth and the inviolable dignity of every human life. Help them ask questions, seek appropriate second opinions, understand the limitations of screening tests, and receive accurate information before drawing conclusions.
Protect them especially from anyone who treats abortion as the expected response to disability, illness, genetic difference, or an uncertain prognosis.
Give parents courage to say:
“Whatever the diagnosis, this is our child.”
If the baby will need treatment before or after birth, prepare the medical team.
If delivery requires special planning, guide every decision.
If the child will live with disability, surround this family with people who will help them discover not merely what their child may struggle to do, but who their child actually is.
And if the diagnosis is life-limiting, Lord, enter that terrible sorrow with them.
Help them cherish every moment of their child’s life, whether that life lasts decades, years, months, days, minutes, or only the hidden months beneath a mother’s heart.
Let no one suggest that a short life is therefore a meaningless life.
Every heartbeat matters.
Every moment of being loved matters.
Every human life belongs first to You.
Mary, you carried Jesus without knowing every sorrow that would accompany His life. Stand beside mothers receiving frightening news about their babies. Wrap them both beneath your mantle.
St. Joseph, stand beside fathers who may feel they must somehow fix what cannot be fixed. Teach them that protecting, providing, remaining present, and loving faithfully are themselves profound acts of fatherhood.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the unborn, pray for every child whose life is threatened because a prenatal test has revealed something unexpected.
Holy Family, remain beside parents as they make difficult decisions. Protect their marriage from fear and isolation. Help them speak honestly, grieve together, hope together, and recognize the precious person entrusted to them.
And Jesus, when medicine cannot promise the outcome we desperately want, remind us that medicine does not determine human worth.
A diagnosis can tell us something about a child’s body.
It cannot tell us the value of that child’s life.
It cannot measure the love that child will give and receive.
It cannot calculate the ways that one small life may transform an entire family.
It cannot see what You see.
So when we are frightened by what we do know, help us entrust to You everything we do not.
Give us wisdom without fear, knowledge without despair, medicine guided by love, and hearts courageous enough to welcome every child as gift.
Whatever comes, let our little one always know, for every moment of his or her life:
You are our child. You are wanted. You are precious. You are loved. And your life is worth living because your life is yours—a gift from God that no diagnosis can take away.
Always remember Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.
Holy Family! Help us to be a holy family and pray for us!
Amen.
