Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother of the true God and Mother of the hidden Christ, we come beneath your mantle carrying an ache that is difficult to explain.
We want a child.
You appeared carrying Jesus within you. Before the world could see Him, before anyone could hold Him, before His tiny feet touched the earth, He was already there—hidden beneath your heart, completely human, completely loved, completely known by God.
So today we bring to you all those who long for the hidden beginning of a child within the womb.
Mary, you know how deeply a woman may long to place her hand over her own body and know that another little heart is beating beneath it.
You know the longing for the positive test.
The first ultrasound.
The first heartbeat.
The first movement.
The growing belly.
The moment when husband and wife look at one another and realize:
There is a little person here because God has allowed our love to become life.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, please intercede for couples experiencing infertility.
Bring their suffering to Jesus.
Where there is illness, ask for healing.
Where something within the body can be restored, ask that it be restored.
Guide physicians to discover causes rather than simply bypass them.
Guide couples toward treatments that respect the dignity of marriage and every human life.
Protect them from desperation.
Protect them from shame.
Protect them from believing that infertility means their bodies are worthless or that God has rejected them.
And Mary, if conception is possible, we ask you plainly:
Please pray that a child may be conceived.
Ask Jesus for the miracle.
Ask Him for new life.
Ask Him for the tiny, hidden beginning that no one else can see.
And from the first instant that life begins, protect that child.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, you remind us that the child within the womb is not an idea, a possibility, a diagnosis, a collection of cells, or a possession.
The child is someone.
Protect every unborn child.
Protect children whose mothers are frightened.
Protect children whose fathers have disappeared or are afraid.
Protect children who receive difficult prenatal diagnoses.
Protect children whose lives are considered inconvenient.
Protect children conceived in circumstances surrounded by poverty, violence, abandonment, or uncertainty.
And protect their mothers too.
Mary, do not let us speak about protecting babies while forgetting the women carrying them.
Wrap frightened mothers beneath your mantle.
Send them food.
Housing.
Medical care.
Friendship.
Protection.
Employment.
Counsel.
Compassion.
People who will stay after the baby is born.
Let no woman believe that abortion is her only way forward.
And bring fathers back to their responsibilities with courage, tenderness, and love.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, we also bring you those waiting through adoption.
Somewhere there may be a mother who is frightened about her child’s future.
Do not let our longing for adoption cause us to pray for her loss.
Instead, pray first for her good and her child’s good.
If she wants to parent and can safely do so with support, send her everything she needs.
If, in freedom and love, she comes to believe adoption is best for her child, surround her with honest people who will respect her dignity and her grief.
Protect her from coercion.
Protect the father of her child.
Protect the child.
And if God should join her child’s story to the story of a waiting family, help everyone involved remember that adoption is not a transaction.
A mother does not cease to matter because another mother begins mothering.
A child’s first story does not disappear when another chapter begins.
Give adoptive families hearts large enough for gratitude, truth, humility, and reverence.
Mary, stay especially close to women who feel betrayed by their own bodies.
When another month begins and hope disappears again, sit beside them.
When they see another pregnant woman and feel a sudden pain they did not choose, do not let them drown in guilt.
When Mother’s Day hurts, remain near.
When they walk past baby clothes they once expected to buy, remain near.
When they have stopped telling people how much it hurts because they are tired of explaining, remain near.
Cover them beneath your mantle.
And Mary, stay near the husbands too.
Sometimes a man watches the woman he loves cry and has no idea what to do.
He cannot fix her infertility.
He cannot guarantee a baby.
He cannot take away her grief.
Teach him the strength of St. Joseph—the strength that stays.
Let husbands hold their wives.
Pray beside them.
Protect them.
Listen to them.
And allow themselves to grieve too.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, remember the parents who are waiting to become grandparents.
Remember siblings waiting to become aunts and uncles.
Remember entire families who have already made room in their hearts for someone who has not yet arrived.
Turn their longing into prayer rather than pressure.
And Mary, we bring you the room that waits.
The crib.
The rocking chair.
The baby clothes.
The names whispered privately.
The adoption paperwork.
The medical records.
The pregnancy tests.
The telephone that has not rung.
The calendar filled with dates that came and went.
We place all of it beneath your mantle.
Especially the empty arms.
Mary, you once held Jesus against your heart.
You kissed His face.
You counted His fingers.
You comforted His cries.
You watched Joseph hold Him.
You lived the ordinary exhaustion and joy of raising a child.
So you understand why these ordinary things can become the subject of extraordinary prayers.
We are not asking for a perfect family.
We are asking for the privilege of loving a child through ordinary life.
If it is God’s will, please pray that one day these arms will no longer be empty.
And if the answer is delayed, keep us close to Jesus while we wait.
If the answer comes differently from what we hoped, help us remain close to Jesus then too.
If we never understand the answer in this life, do not let sorrow separate us from your Son.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, when you came to St. Juan Diego, you spoke with the tenderness of a mother.
We need that tenderness now.
Remind us that we are not abandoned.
Remind us that God sees what no one else sees.
Remind us that hidden things can still be holy things.
A child can be hidden in the womb.
A prayer can be hidden in the heart.
A miracle can begin before anyone recognizes it.
And God’s work can be hidden long before we understand what He is doing.
So we will keep praying.
We will keep hoping.
We will keep loving.
And we will keep asking:
Mary, please bring our prayer to Jesus.
For healing.
For conception.
For a safe pregnancy.
For a child.
For an adoption match if that is God’s path.
For birth parents.
For waiting parents.
For grandparents.
For every vulnerable baby.
For every aching mother.
For every silent father.
For every marriage carrying this cross.
And for the grace to say, as you did, even through trembling and tears:
May it be done to me according to Your word.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother of Jesus and our mother, wrap this entire intention in your mantle and carry it to your Son.
And if one day we finally hold the child for whom we have prayed, help the first prayer whispered over that little life be one of gratitude:
Thank You, Jesus.
Thank you, Mary.
This child always belonged first to God.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us.
Always remember Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.
Holy Family! Help us to be a holy family and pray for us!
Amen.
