Lord Jesus, today I ask You to place upon my heart one little child whose name I may never know.
Somewhere, perhaps today, a new human life is beginning.
A child known completely by You.
A child whose mother may already know she is pregnant—or may not know yet.
A child whose father may be joyful, frightened, absent, supportive, confused, or unaware.
A child whose future may already be surrounded by uncertainty.
Lord, if there is a baby in danger of abortion who especially needs prayer, I ask You to receive my prayers for that child.
I spiritually adopt this little one in prayer.
Not because this child belongs to me.
This child belongs first to You.
I may never see this baby’s face.
I may never know whether the child is a boy or a girl.
I may never know the child’s name.
I may never know the mother or father.
I may never know whether my prayers made any visible difference.
But You know.
You knew this child from the first instant of his or her existence.
You know every cell.
Every chromosome.
Every tiny part of this developing body.
You know the child’s mother.
You know the child’s father.
You know their circumstances.
You know their fears.
You know the pressures surrounding them.
And You know exactly what they need.
So for the next nine months, I will carry this child in a different way.
Not beneath my heart—
but within my prayers.
When I wake, remind me of this little one.
When I attend Mass, let me remember this child at the altar.
When I receive You in the Eucharist, let me whisper a prayer for this baby and the baby’s parents.
When I make sacrifices, let me offer some of them for this child’s protection.
When ordinary frustrations come, help me sometimes say:
Jesus, I offer this for my spiritually adopted baby.
And as the months pass, let me imagine—not an anonymous problem or political argument—but a developing human child.
During the earliest weeks, when almost no one can see that this child exists:
Protect this hidden life.
When the tiny heart begins beating:
Guard that heart.
As arms and legs form:
Protect them.
As tiny fingers and toes appear:
Bless them.
As the child begins to move:
Keep this little one safe.
As the child grows large enough for the mother to feel those movements:
Let every flutter and kick speak quietly to her heart:
There is someone here.
As the months continue and the baby grows:
Give mother and child good medical care.
Provide food.
Housing.
Safety.
Transportation.
Employment.
Childcare.
Family support.
Wise counselors.
Faithful friends.
Whatever is truly needed.
Lord, sometimes a woman considers abortion because she believes there is no other possible future.
Show her another future.
If she is afraid she cannot afford a baby, send practical help.
If she fears losing her job, send advocates and assistance.
If she fears being abandoned, send someone who stays.
If her parents are angry, soften their hearts.
If the baby’s father is pressuring her toward abortion, give him courage to protect his child instead.
If the father wants the child but feels powerless, give him wisdom and appropriate help.
If she is being coerced, threatened, trafficked, abused, or controlled, bring her to safety.
If she feels ashamed, remind her of her dignity.
If she feels completely alone, Lord—
send someone.
Let someone answer the telephone.
Let someone open a door.
Let someone offer a room.
Let someone bring groceries.
Let someone accompany her to an appointment.
Let someone help with rent.
Let someone watch her other children.
Let someone tell her:
“You do not have to face this alone.”
And Lord, if prenatal testing brings frightening news, surround this family with physicians who recognize the dignity of their child.
A diagnosis does not erase personhood.
A disability does not erase dignity.
A short life is still a human life.
Give parents truthful information, compassionate medical care, and people willing to accompany them through whatever comes.
Protect them from being made to feel that abortion is the only compassionate response to suffering or disability.
Lord, if this pregnancy resulted from violence, be especially near.
What happened to this mother was not made good because a child was conceived.
Her suffering matters.
Her trauma matters.
Her safety matters.
Bring justice and healing.
Surround her with extraordinary tenderness.
And protect the innocent child without ever minimizing the terrible wrong committed against the mother.
Jesus, if this baby’s mother believes she cannot parent, help everyone around her first ask:
What would make parenting possible?
If what she needs is support, provide support.
If family can safely help, strengthen that family.
If the baby’s father can responsibly parent, call him to step forward.
And if, after free and careful discernment, adoption truly becomes the best path, protect the mother from coercion.
Guide her toward ethical people who will honor her dignity.
Guide the child toward a loving family.
Let adoption never treat a woman as a means of obtaining a baby.
Let it honor mother, father, child, truth, grief, and love.
Lord, I also pray for those working where abortion decisions are being made.
Doctors.
Nurses.
Counselors.
Receptionists.
Administrators.
Give them courage to recognize the humanity before them.
If someone is troubled in conscience, strengthen that person to step away from participation in abortion and toward work that protects and heals.
And Lord, I pray for those who have already participated in an abortion.
Do not let shame convince them that they are beyond Your mercy.
Lead them toward repentance, reconciliation, healing, and the inexhaustible mercy of Jesus Christ.
Let the Church be a place where truth and mercy meet.
Mary, Mother of Jesus, I entrust this spiritually adopted child to you.
You carried the Savior hidden beneath your heart.
You know the mystery of a child whom the world cannot yet see.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness so closely associated with the protection and dignity of unborn life, spread your mantle over this mother and child.
Stay near them.
St. Joseph, protector of Jesus and Mary, guard this little family.
You knew what it was to face uncertainty and danger while protecting a Child.
Intercede especially for the baby’s father.
Call him toward courage, responsibility, sacrifice, and love.
And Blessed Fulton Sheen, whose name has become so closely associated with the beautiful practice of spiritually adopting an unborn child, pray with us.
Help us remember that defending life must never remain merely an idea.
Teach us to pray.
To sacrifice.
To love.
To assist.
To accompany.
And to see a person where the world may see only a problem.
Lord Jesus, I may never know what happens to the child for whom I am praying.
That is difficult.
I would like to know.
I would like someday to discover:
The baby lived.
But perhaps that knowledge will not be given to me in this life.
So I entrust the outcome to You.
For nine months, let this child have one more person on earth praying:
Protect this baby.
Protect this mother.
Strengthen this father.
Send this family help.
Let this child live.
And if this baby is born, wherever that birth occurs, let there be someone waiting with open arms.
Let the child be warm.
Fed.
Held.
Protected.
Loved.
Let someone look into that tiny face and rejoice:
You are here.
Perhaps I will never hear that baby’s first cry.
But You will.
Perhaps I will never hold that little hand.
But You can place others there who will.
Perhaps this child will never know my name.
That does not matter.
I am not praying to be remembered.
I am praying because this little life matters.
And if someday, in eternity, You allow me to know the story behind these prayers, what a joy it would be to discover that somewhere on earth there lived a person for whom I prayed before we ever met.
Until then, I will simply call this little one:
my spiritually adopted baby.
Not because I possess this child—
but because I have promised to remember this child before God.
Jesus, guard this little life.
Mary, cover this child beneath your mantle.
Joseph, protect this family.
Blessed Fulton Sheen, pray for us.
And teach me that spiritual adoption is not merely nine months of words.
Let these prayers change me.
Make me more generous toward mothers in need.
More willing to help families.
More attentive to foster and adoptive children.
More compassionate toward frightened parents.
More willing to sacrifice.
More courageous in defending human dignity.
More merciful toward those carrying regret.
More faithful in recognizing the image of God in every human person—from the first moment of life until natural death.
For the next nine months, Lord, whenever I remember this little child, let one simple prayer rise from my heart:
Jesus, let this baby live, and let this mother and father know that they are not alone.
I place this child beneath the protection of the Holy Family.
Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, protect this little one.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for this mother and child.
St. Joseph, protect this father and his baby.
Blessed Fulton Sheen, pray for us.
Always remember Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.
Holy Family! Help us to be a holy family and pray for us!
Amen.
