Lord Jesus, somewhere within Your Providence is the child we hope one day to call our own.
We do not know when we will meet. We do not know how old this child will be, what circumstances will bring our lives together, or whether this little one has even been conceived yet. We cannot see the path from where we stand today.
But You can.
And so, before we can tuck this child into bed, make breakfast, kiss a scraped knee, listen to a story about the day, or whisper “I love you” across a darkened bedroom, we begin loving this child in the only way available to us now:
We pray.
Lord, wherever this child is—or whenever this child’s life begins—be there.
If our little one is already growing beneath a mother’s heart, protect them both. Let the child hear the steady rhythm of that mother’s heartbeat and grow safely within the sanctuary of her body. Give the mother good care, nourishment, safety, peace, and support.
If our child has not yet been conceived, bless the future we cannot see. Guard every person who will someday become part of this child’s story.
If our child has already been born, protect those little eyes and ears, those hands and feet, that developing mind, and that tender heart. Let this child be held when crying, fed when hungry, comforted when frightened, and surrounded by people who recognize that every child deserves safety and love.
Lord, wherever our child is, please whisper what we cannot yet whisper:
You are loved.
Before we ever know your name, you are loved.
Before you ever know ours, you are prayed for.
Before your picture ever sits in our home, there is already a place for you within our hearts.
But Jesus, help us remember that this child does not exist to complete us.
This little one belongs first to You.
Our child will not be a reward for years of waiting, a cure for infertility, or an answer whose purpose is to erase our grief. This child will be a unique human person with a story, temperament, gifts, wounds, questions, relationships, and vocation entirely his or her own.
Prepare us to receive the real child rather than the child we have imagined.
If our little one comes carrying grief, teach us patience.
If attachment takes time, teach us not to take that personally.
If our child someday grieves the loss inherent in adoption, give us the courage to sit beside that grief rather than becoming threatened by it.
If our child longs to know more about birth parents, history, or origins, help us understand that those questions do not diminish the love between us.
Give us hearts large enough to honor every part of our child’s story.
Bless the mother who may carry this child.
Lord, we cannot pray for our future child without praying for her.
Protect her. Love her. Provide for her. Give her genuine support and freedom. If she chooses to parent her child, bless and strengthen her in that vocation. If she freely discerns an adoption plan, surround her with compassionate people who respect her dignity, her motherhood, and her grief.
Bless the child’s father as well. Give him courage, responsibility, wisdom, and love.
And if their decision eventually brings this child into our family, never allow us to forget them.
Let our child grow up knowing that adoption does not mean appearing from nowhere. There was a mother whose body sheltered this life. There was a father through whom this life began. There is a history that deserves truth and respect.
Mary, Mother of Jesus, watch over this child with us.
When we cannot hold our little one, hold this child beneath your mantle.
St. Joseph, protect this child as you protected Jesus.
When danger comes, guard.
When uncertainty comes, remain.
When this little one needs a fatherly protector, intercede.
Guardian angel of the child we hope to adopt, remain faithfully near. Guard every step that happens before our paths meet.
And Jesus, prepare us too.
While we pray for our child, make us into the parents this particular child will need.
Give us patience greater than our expectations, humility greater than our pride, tenderness greater than our frustration, and faithfulness strong enough for ordinary days.
Teach us to apologize when we fail.
Teach us to listen before fixing.
Teach us to discipline with love rather than anger.
Teach us to recognize that parenthood is not possession but stewardship.
If the day finally comes when someone places this child into our arms, let us remember all these prayers offered when those arms were empty.
Perhaps we will look into a little face and realize:
This is the child we prayed for without knowing who we were praying for.
Until then, Lord, bridge the distance between us.
Where our hands cannot reach, let our prayers reach.
Where our voices cannot be heard, let Your voice speak.
Where our protection cannot extend, send Your angels.
And when we ache because we cannot yet say goodnight to our child, remind us that You never stop watching.
Lord Jesus, wherever this precious child is tonight—or if this child’s life still waits somewhere within the mystery of tomorrow—keep our little one close to Your Sacred Heart.
And if it is Your holy will that our lives become one family, lead us toward each other in the fullness of Your time.
Until then, little one, wherever you are:
You are already prayed for.
You are already hoped for.
You are already loved.
Always remember Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.
Holy Family! Help us to be a holy family and pray for us!
Amen.
